Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Autumn Poems 1115
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poet wonders whether the bush clover flowers on the moor where autumn mist trails are scattering by now, though he has not yet had his fill of them. Thinking of the bush clover hidden from sight by the mist, it expresses regret at their falling.
In Book Ten of the Man'yōshū there is a similar poem whose first line is "asagiri no," the morning mist.
The author, written as "Hitomaro," is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, the foremost poet of the Man'yōshū, revered in later ages as the saint of poetry. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. The Shūishū includes many poems from the Man'yōshū and the Hitomaro Collection under his name.
First line, "akigiri no," means "the autumn mist."
Second line, "tanabiku ono no," means "of the moor where it trails," with "o" a prefix that adjusts the rhythm.
Third line, "hagi no hana," is the bush clover flower, emblematic of autumn. From 1116 through 1119 poems on bush clover follow, moving from its flowers to its lower leaves.
Fourth line, "ima ya chiruran," means "are they scattering now," with "ya" a questioning binding particle resolved by "ran," the attributive form of the auxiliary of present conjecture. The poem breaks after this fourth line.
Final line, "imada akanaku ni," means "though I have not yet had my fill," with "nakuni," a negative form followed by "ni," expressing concession and a sigh.
