Commentary
Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Autumn Poems 1135

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poet says that even the autumn leaves of a shrine the priests keep so carefully holy are said to scatter beyond the sacred rope. Bringing up autumn leaves that scatter past the rope marking the sacred precinct, the poem is taken to entrust a wish to cross a barrier, saying that even things strictly kept apart must sometimes cross their bounds.

First line, "hafuriko ga," means "the shrine priests."
Second line, "iwau yashiro no," means "of the shrine they keep holy, shunning all defilement."
Third line, "momijiba mo," means "even the autumn leaves."
Fourth line, "shime oba koete," means "crossing the sacred rope," with "oba" a strengthened form of "o."
Final line, "chiru to iu mono o," means "scatter, they say, and yet," with "mono o" expressing concession and a sigh.
