Headnote: "In the tenth month, people crossing the Shiga mountain road"
The poet says that though, by its name, Nagara is a mountain "unchanged since of old," in the season of early winter showers its colors have changed. The headnote shows it was written on a scene of people crossing the Shiga mountain road in the tenth month. Joining in "nagara" the phrase "mukashi nagara," unchanged since of old, and Mount Nagara, it portrays with wit a mountain whose leaves turn in the showers, against its own name.
The author, written as "Minamoto no Shitagō," is Minamoto no Shitagau. Of the Saga Genji line, he took part, as one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber, in compiling the Gosenshū and reading the Man'yōshū, and he compiled the dictionary Wamyō Ruijushō. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "na o kikeba," means "when I hear its name."
Second line, "mukashi nagara no," turns on the pivot word "nagara," joining "nagara," just as of old, and Mount Nagara in Ōmi province.
Third line, "yama naredo," means "though it is a mountain," with "do" a concessive particle.
Fourth line, "shigururu koro wa," means "in the season of showers," continuing the poems on showers with the preceding poem, 1138, and the next poem, 1140.
Final line, "iro kawarikeri," means "its colors have changed," with "keri" a sigh of realization. It pairs with "mukashi nagara" in the second line, as the unchanging against the changed.
