Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Congratulatory Poems 1204
Headnote: "On a rainy day after she had left the palace for Higashi Sanjō"
The poet says it is sad to see her house, into which nothing but rain leaks and which no one guards, as a field of tangled reeds. The headnote shows it was composed on a rainy day when she had left the palace and withdrawn to the Higashi Sanjō residence. Pivoting on "moru," to leak and to guard, it laments the desolation of a dwelling going to ruin without visits from the emperor, laying it over the scene of a leaking house and a moor of reeds. Following the house where no one passes in the preceding poem, 1203, it sings of a dwelling with no visitors.
The author's name, "Consort of the Shōkyōden," is a title for an imperial consort whose quarters were the Shōkyōden in the palace. There is no settled view as to whom it refers.
First line, "ame narade," means "save for the rain," with "de" a negative conjunctive particle.
Second line, "moru hito mo naki," is a pivot word: "moru" means rain "leaking" and "guarding" a house. It layers nothing leaking in with no one standing guard. The fourth line of the next poem, 1205, "yado moru ame ni," likewise pivots on leaking and guarding.
Third line, "waga yado o," means "my house," sharing the words "waga yado" with the final line of the preceding poem, 1203, "waga yado no michi."
Fourth line, "asajigahara to," means "as a moor of low reeds," likening the dwelling gone to ruin to a wild field.
Final line, "miru zo kanashiki," means "how sad it is to see," with the binding particle "zo" resolved by "kanashiki," the attributive form of the adjective "kanashi."
