Book Nineteen Miscellaneous Love Poems 1220
Headnote: "Sent when, still a Lesser Captain, he passed in front of the Uneme quarters and Uneme of Asuka was gazing out"
The poet says she looks as if secretly waiting for someone, and asks who it is that has given her hope for tonight. The headnote shows that when he was still a Lesser Captain, he passed in front of the quarters of the uneme, the palace attendants, and seeing Uneme of Asuka gazing out, he sent her this. Taking the attendant's pensive gaze for the face of one awaiting a lover, he playfully asks whom she is waiting for. The next poem, 1221, is her reply.
The author, written as "Ononomiya Chancellor," is Fujiwara no Saneyori. The eldest son of the Regent Fujiwara no Tadahira, he rose to Regent and Chancellor and founded the Ononomiya line.
"Mata" in the headnote of the main text is read here as "mada," still.
First line, "hito shirenu," means "unknown to others," speaking of a secret love.
Second line, "hito machigao ni," means "with the look of one waiting for someone," repeating "hito" from the first line. It pairs with the final line of the next poem, 1221, "matsu hito mo nashi," around the theme of waiting.
Third line, "miyumeru wa," means "you seem to be," with "meru" the attributive form of the auxiliary of inference "meri."
Fourth line, "ta ga tanometaru," means "whom has given you hope," with "tanomu" in its lower bigrade form meaning to make someone rely on a promise.
Final line, "koyoi naruran," means "is this the night," with "ran" the attributive form of the auxiliary of present conjecture.
