Parting while at home,
at such a time I find
it is more wretched
than when the mountain spring
grew clouded long ago.

Headnote: "On the morning the Sanjō Principal Handmaid was leaving after coming to avoid an unlucky direction, she said he could no longer compose a poem like the one about water clouded by drops; and as she was about to get into her carriage"
The poet says that parting while at home is more wretched than the parting at the clouded mountain spring. The headnote shows that the Sanjō Principal Handmaid came to his house to avoid an unlucky direction, and on the morning she left she said he could surely no longer compose a poem like the one about water clouded by drops; he composed this as she was getting into her carriage. To her words, which cited the famous poem preceding, 1228, he answered at once with wit that this parting was harder than that one. The Sanjō Principal Handmaid is said to be Fujiwara no Manshi.
The author, Ki no Tsurayuki, was the leading compiler of the Kokinshū, wrote its kana preface and the Tosa Diary. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
