Headnote: "A reply to what Lord Tadafusa sent from Yamato while he was in Izumi Province"
The poet says that, true to the name of the pines on the beach of Takashi, where the waves run high, he has been waiting for his friend all along. The headnote shows it was his reply to a poem Fujiwara no Tadafusa sent from Yamato while the poet was in Izumi Province. Bringing in the beach of Takashi, a poetic place in Izumi, and laying "matsu," to wait, over the name of the pine, he conveys how eagerly he had awaited word from his friend. Fujiwara no Tadafusa was a poet well versed in music, whose poems appear in the Kokinshū as well.
The author, written as "Tsurayuki," is Ki no Tsurayuki, the leading compiler of the Kokinshū, who wrote its kana preface and the Tosa Diary. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "okitsu nami," means "the waves of the offing," leading into "takashi" in the second line.
Second line, "Takashi no hama no," is a pivot word: "takashi" means the waves are "high" and Takashi, a place in Izumi.
Third line, "hamamatsu no," means "of the beach pines," running into "na," name, in the fourth line and drawing "matsu," to wait, from the name of the pine.
Fourth line, "na ni koso kimi o," means "true to that name, you," with the binding particle "koso" resolved by the perfective "tsure" in the final line.
Final line, "machiwataritsure," means "I have been waiting all along," with "wataru" expressing continued action and "tsure" the perfective form of the perfective auxiliary "tsu."
