Tamamo karu ama no yukikata sasu sao no nagaku ya hito o uramiwataran

English Translation
As the fisherfolk
who gather jeweled seaweed
push their long poles out,
shall I as long go on, I wonder,
crossing bays of bitter blame?
Meaning
Like the long pole the fisherfolk push as they go gathering jeweled seaweed, shall I go on resenting that person for so long, I wonder?
Commentary
Book Nineteen Miscellaneous Love Poems 1272

Headnote: "For a screen of the Sanjō Minister of the Right"
The poet asks whether, like the pole the fisherfolk push as they go to gather jeweled seaweed, he will go on resenting that person for so long. The headnote shows it was written for a screen of the Sanjō Minister of the Right, Fujiwara no Sadakata. From the painted figure of fisherfolk poling across the sea, it lays a long-lasting resentment over the long pole, and pivoting on "urami," viewing the bay and resentment, and on "wataru," to cross and to go on, it sings of the grief of love that keeps thinking of a cold-hearted person.
The author, written as "Tsurayuki," is Ki no Tsurayuki, the leading compiler of the Kokinshū, who wrote its kana preface and the Tosa Diary. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "tamamo karu," means "gathering jeweled seaweed," with "tama" a word of praise.
Second line, "ama no yukikata," means "the way the fisherfolk go."
Third line, "sasu sao no," means "of the pole they push." Up to here the lines form a preface leading to "nagaku" in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "nagaku ya hito o," means "for so long, that person," with the binding particle "ya" resolved by "ran" in the final line.
Final line, "uramiwataran," is a pivot word: "urami" means "viewing the bay," linked to the fisherfolk, and "resentment," and "wataru" means "crossing" by pole and "going on." "Ran" is the attributive form of the conjectural auxiliary.
