English Translation
My own breasts that nursed you
and made you a man, I burned
in a flame of grief;
dyed with their charcoal, my son,
wear this robe of mourning ink.
Meaning
I burned these breasts that nursed you into a man, and with their charcoal dyed this robe of ink-black mourning. Wear it, my son.
Commentary
Book Twenty Lament Poems 1294

Headnote: "When Toshinobu was sent into exile, she heard that those exiled went in heavy mourning dress, and sent this from his mother's house tied to a robe"
The poet tells her son to wear the ink-dyed robe colored with the charcoal of the breasts that raised him, burned in flame. The headnote shows that when Toshinobu was sent into exile, she heard that the exiled went wearing heavy mourning, and sent this from her house tied to a robe. Saying the robe was dyed by burning the breasts that nursed her child, she conveys a mother's anguish, grieving her parting from the exiled son as though it were a parting by death.
The author, the Mother of Toshinobu, is the mother of Toshinobu in the headnote. Who Toshinobu was is unclear.

First line, "hito nashishi," means "that raised you into a man," with "shi" the attributive form of the past auxiliary "ki."
Second line, "mune no chibusa o," means "the breasts of my bosom," the body of the mother who raised the child.
Third line, "homura nite," means "as a flame," layered with the fire of longing in her breast.
Fourth line, "yaku sumizome no," is a pivot word: "sumi" means "charcoal" from the burning and the "ink" of ink-dyed mourning. It shares this word with the third line of 1290 in this book, "sumizome no."
Final line, "koromo kiyo kimi," means "wear this robe, my son," calling out in the imperative.
