Commentary
Book One Spring Poems I 9

Headnote: "Composed as a poem on haze within a hundred-poem sequence in the reign of Emperor Horikawa"
Composed on the topic "haze" for the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequence, this poem says that spring has come to Mount Furu in Yamato and haze has spread across it as if the mountain had put on a robe. The name of the mountain is introduced with words evoking a lover's waving sleeves, and by likening the haze to a robe the poet portrays the whole mountain as a figure dressed for spring.
The author, "Former Middle Counselor Masafusa," is Ōe no Masafusa, son of Ōe no Narihira. A scholar who served three emperors, Go-Sanjō, Shirakawa and Horikawa, he rose to Provisional Middle Counselor. Famed for his learning, he was one of the poets of the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequence.
The first two lines draw on the phrasing of a Man'yōshū poem by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro that links maidens' waving sleeves to Mount Furu.

First line, "wagimoko ga": "my beloved," leading into "sode furu" in the second line.
Second line, "sode furu yama mo": "furu" is a pivot word meaning both "waving" sleeves and the place name Furu. Mount Furu stands at Isonokami in Yamato, site of Isonokami Shrine.
Third line, "haru kite zo": the particle "zo" forms a kakari-musubi with "keru" in the last line.
Fourth line, "kasumi no koromo": the haze on the mountain likened to a robe, an associated word with "sleeves" in the second line.
Fifth line, "tachiwatarikeru": "tachi" is a pivot word meaning both haze "rising" and cloth being "cut," associated with "robe." "Wataru" means to spread across, and "keru" closes the construction begun by "zo."
