Gazing far across,
there's no cedar as a sign
to say, "it is there":
is it hidden in the haze,
the foot of Mount Miwa?

- Gazing far across, I see no cedar to mark the spot and say, "there it is." Is the foot of Mount Miwa hidden somewhere in the haze?

Book One Spring Poems I 11
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a poem on haze"
Like the preceding poem, this one was composed on the topic "haze." Looking toward the foot of Mount Miwa, the poet can see no cedar to show that this is the place, and wonders whether it lies hidden in the haze. Where the preceding poem flatly named haze as the reason the cedar was invisible, this poem searches within the haze.
The author, "Captain of the Left Military Guards Takafusa," is Fujiwara no Takafusa, son of Provisional Major Counselor Fujiwara no Takasue, who later himself became Provisional Major Counselor. Married to a daughter of Taira no Kiyomori, he was closely tied to the Taira clan.
Like the preceding poem, it takes as its foundation the anonymous Kokin Wakashū poem about a hut at the foot of Mount Miwa marked by a cedar at the gate.
First line, "miwataseba": "as I gaze across," the same phrase as in 1 and 8, showing the poet searching a wide view for the object of his gaze.
Second line, "soko to shirushi no": "soko to" means "pointing out that it is there," and "shirushi" is a landmark.
Third line, "sugi mo nashi": "there is no cedar to mark it." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "kasumi no uchi ya": "ya" expresses a question, "is it within the haze?"
Fifth line, "Miwa no yamamoto": the same closing line as the preceding poem, 10, ending on a noun. Where that poem asserted "kasumi zo tateru," this one asks "kasumi no uchi ya," so the two treat the same scene in different keys.
