Book One Spring Poems I 16
Headnote: "Reply"
This is Minamoto no Toshiyori's reply to Fujiwara no Toshitada's poem. To Toshitada's invitation to come and ask how many layers of snow lay on the plum, he answers that not only snow but his own heart has flown there and piled up, so why tell him to come? Pivoting "yuki" on "snow" and taking up "kasanaru" and "toe" directly from the original poem, he makes a witty reply.
The author, "Minamoto no Toshiyori Ason," is Minamoto no Toshiyori, son of Major Counselor Minamoto no Tsunenobu. A leading figure in the poetry circle of Emperor Horikawa, he compiled the Kin'yō Wakashū at the command of Retired Emperor Shirakawa. Fujiwara no Shunzei, compiler of the Senzai Wakashū, deeply revered him, and more of his poems are included in this anthology than those of any other poet.
First line, "umegae ni": responding to the plum branch he was sent. The next poem, 17, begins with the same line, continuing a run of poems on snow on plum branches.
Second line, "kokoro mo yukite": "yuki" is a pivot word meaning both "going" and "snow," so his heart too has fallen and piled on the branch like snow.
Third line, "kasanaru o": picks up "kasanaru kazu" from the preceding poem, 15.
Fourth line, "shirade ya hito no": "de" is negative conjunctive, and the interrogative "ya" links with "ramu" in the last line. "Hito" refers to the sender, Toshitada.
Fifth line, "toe to iuramu": answering the earlier poem's last line, "toe to koso omoe," with "do you tell me to come and visit?"
