Book One Spring Poems I 25
Headnote: "Composed as a poem on plum when he summoned hundred-poem sequences"
Composed on the topic "plum" by Retired Emperor Sutoku himself when he summoned hundred-poem sequences from his poets, this poem says that in the darkness of a spring night the swirling wind carries plum scent everywhere, so that every tree smells of plum and seems to be a plum. It captures the spread of unseen night fragrance together with the movement of the wind.
The author, "Poem by Retired Emperor Sutoku," is Retired Emperor Sutoku, eldest son of Emperor Toba; "gyosei" denotes a poem composed by an emperor or retired emperor. He led the poetic world of the cloistered-rule period and commissioned the Kyūan Hundred-Poem Sequences, but after his defeat in the Hōgen Disturbance he was exiled to Sanuki and died there.
The phrase "ki goto ni," "tree after tree," also appears in Ki no Tomonori's Kokin Wakashū poem asking which tree to pick as plum when snow has made blossoms bloom on every tree.
First line, "haru no yo wa": the same first line as the preceding poem, 24, continuing the poems on plum scent at night.
Second line, "fukimau kaze no": wind swirling in all directions.
Third line, "utsuriga o": "utsuriga" is scent transferred, here plum fragrance carried on the wind.
Fourth line, "ki goto ni ume to": "every tree as plum." It contains a play on characters: "tree" plus "every" makes the character for "plum."
Fifth line, "omoikeru kana": "keru" is the attributive of "keri" expressing realization, and "kana" is exclamatory.
