Book One Spring Poems I 32
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the spirit of spring rain when presenting a hundred-poem sequence in the reign of Emperor Horikawa"
Like the preceding poem, this one was composed on "spring rain" for the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequence. Ever since the spring rain began to fall, the plain spreading at the foot of the hills at Kataoka has turned pale green, as though dyed by the rain. Through the conceit of rain dyeing the fields, it captures the color of early spring meadows as grass begins to sprout.
The author, "Fujiwara no Mototoshi," was a son of Minister of the Right Fujiwara no Toshiie. Ranked alongside Minamoto no Toshiyori in Emperor Horikawa's poetry circle, he was the teacher of Fujiwara no Shunzei, compiler of the Senzai Wakashū. His official career was modest, and he rose no higher than the Junior Fifth Rank, Upper Grade.
First line, "harusame no": takes up spring rain from the preceding poem, 31.
Second line, "furisomeshi yori": "some" is a pivot word meaning both "began" to fall and "dyed," an associated word with "asamidori" (pale green) in the last line.
Third line, "Kataoka no": a place name in Yamato and a poetic place. Ashita Plain in the opening poem, 1, is also a field in Kataoka, so the field where haze was seen at the start of spring now turns green in spring rain.
Fourth line, "susono no hara zo": the plain at the mountain's foot. The particle "zo" links with "naru" in the last line.
Fifth line, "asamidori naru": "asamidori" is pale green, and "naru," the attributive of the copula "nari," closes the construction begun by "zo."
