Book One Spring Poems I 49
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a poem on cherry blossoms for the poetry contest at the Kaya-no-in residence of the former Chancellor in the eighth year of Kanji"
Like the preceding poem, this one was composed on "cherry blossoms" for the 1094 contest at Kaya-no-in. So great is the poet's longing for the cherries that there is not a single mountain his heart has not clung to, he says, adding, though my heart is no spring haze. With wit he depicts a heart that settles on every blossoming mountain, like the spring haze that hangs on every hill.
The author, "Fujiwara no Akitsuna Ason," is Fujiwara no Akitsuna, son of Consultant Fujiwara no Kanetsune. He served as governor of Sanuki and was known as the Sanuki lay priest. He was the father of Fujiwara no Nagako, author of the Sanuki no Suke Diary.
First line, "hana yue ni": "because of the blossoms." 62 in this book begins with the same line and describes a heart wandering the mountains for the sake of the flowers.
Second line, "kakaranu yama zo": "kakaru" combines the heart being drawn to something and haze hanging on a mountain. The particle "zo" links with "keru" in the third line.
Third line, "nakarikeru": "there was none," and the poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "kokoro wa haru no": modifies "kasumi" in the last line.
Fifth line, "kasumi naranedo": "ne" is the perfective of the negative "zu," and "do" is concessive, "though it is not haze." In inverted order, it reveals that "kakaru" in the second line was a word associated with haze.
