Book One Spring Poems I 51
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed when Retired Emperor Shirakawa visited the Kyōgoku residence during the tenfold offering service, and had poems presented the following day"
Like the preceding poem, this one was composed at the Retired Emperor's request the day after Retired Emperor Shirakawa visited the tenfold offering service at Fujiwara no Morozane's Kyōgoku residence. Gazing across hills in full blossom, the poet feels as though the cherries' color has spread into the sky, so that even the sky glows with beauty. The splendor of mountains filled with cherries is extended to the heavens.
The author, "the Go-Nijō Chancellor and Palace Minister," is Fujiwara no Moromichi, son of the Kyōgoku Former Chancellor Fujiwara no Morozane. After serving as Palace Minister he became Chancellor, but died at thirty-eight. He was called the Go-Nijō Chancellor and left the diary Go-Nijō Moromichi Ki.
First line, "hanazakari": the peak of the cherry blossoms.
Second line, "haru no yamabe o": "across the spring hills."
Third line, "miwataseba": "as I gaze across." Where the opening poem, 1, surveyed a hazy plain, this poem surveys mountains in full bloom, showing how far spring has advanced.
Fourth line, "sora sae niou": "sae" is additive, "not only the hills but even the sky," and "niou" means to glow with beauty. As with "koe sae niou" in 28, "sae niou" expresses the spreading beauty of the blossoms.
Fifth line, "kokochi koso sure": a kakari-musubi of "koso" and the perfective "sure," the same last line as 24 in this book.
