Coming here to seek,
I break the cherry boughs,
and with their morning dew
there's not a single day
my flowered sleeves stay dry
Meaning
Coming each morning in search of the cherries and breaking off their boughs, I find there is not a single day my flowered sleeves stay dry from the morning dew.
Commentary
Book One Spring Poems I 53

Headnote: "Composed on the theme "viewing blossoms every morning""
Composed on the theme "viewing blossoms every morning," this poem says that since the poet comes every morning to the cherries and breaks off their branches, not a single day passes without the sleeves of his blossom-viewing robe being soaked by the dew on them. It expresses a deep attachment to the cherries, visiting them each morning heedless of wet sleeves.
The author, "the Naka-no-in Minister of the Right," is Minamoto no Masasada, son of Chancellor Minamoto no Masazane, who rose to Minister of the Right. Called the Naka-no-in Minister of the Right, he excelled in poetry and music. "Ōimauchigimi" means a minister of state.
The third line of the main text reads "あキふに," which does not match "asatsuyu ni" in the reading line. Since the main text does not make sense as written, the poem is interpreted here according to the reading line.

First line, "tazunekite": "coming in search of the cherries."
Second line, "taoru sakura no": "taoru" means to break off by hand.
Third line, "asatsuyu ni": "by the morning dew" on the cherries, expressing the theme's "every morning."
Fourth line, "hana no tamoto no": the sleeves of a splendid robe for blossom viewing, also suggesting sleeves that have broken off blossoms.
Fifth line, "nurenu hi zo naki": a double negative, "there is no day they are not wet," stressing that they are wet every day. "Zo" links with "naki," the attributive of the adjective "nashi."
