Yamazakura chiji ni kokoro no kudakuru wa chiru hana goto ni sou ni ya aruran

English Translation
Mountain cherries:
my heart breaks in a thousand
pieces, can it be
because with every blossom
that falls a piece goes along?
Meaning
Is it because a piece of my heart goes along with every falling blossom that my heart breaks into a thousand pieces over the mountain cherries?
Commentary
Book Two Spring Poems II 84

Headnote: "Composed on cherries when presenting a hundred-poem sequence in the reign of Emperor Horikawa"
Composed on "cherries" for the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequence, for which poets each presented one hundred poems in the reign of Emperor Horikawa. Watching the mountain cherries fall, the poet wonders whether his heart breaks into a thousand pieces because it clings to and follows each and every falling petal. The witty conceit of the heart dividing as countless blossoms fall expresses the turmoil of grief for the cherries.
The author, "Former Middle Counselor Masafusa," is Ōe no Masafusa, son of Ōe no Narihira. As a scholar he served three emperors, Go-Sanjō, Shirakawa and Horikawa, rising to Provisional Middle Counselor. Famed for his learning, he was one of the poets of the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequence.

First line, "yamazakura": names the subject. Like 81 and 83, this poem treats mountain cherries.
Second line, "chiji ni kokoro no": "chiji ni" means "in a thousand ways, into fine pieces," describing a heart divided countless times.
Third line, "kudakuru wa": the attributive form of the verb for a heart breaking or being thrown into turmoil, presented with "wa."
Fourth line, "chiru hana goto ni": "with each falling blossom," which answers "chiji ni" in the second line, overlaying countless petals and a heart split countless ways. The next poem, 85, also begins with "hana no chiru."
Fifth line, "sou ni ya aruran": the interrogative "ya" closes with the attributive "ran," surmising the reason: is it because the heart goes along with the blossoms?
