Commentary
Book Two Spring Poems II 89

Headnote: "Composed as a poem on blossoms"
Composed on the topic of "blossoms." As the wind blows down from Mount Hira, where the cherries are in bloom, fallen petals cover the lake, and the waves of Shiga's bay gradually turn into blossoms themselves. Where the two preceding poems likened blossoms to waves, this one reverses the direction, saying that the waves become blossoms, and captures as a moving scene the process by which the lake is whitened by falling flowers.
The author, "Middle Captain of the Left Yoshitsune," is Fujiwara no Yoshitsune, son of Regent Kujō Kanezane, who later rose to Regent and Chancellor. Known as the Go-Kyōgoku Regent, he is famous as the poet who wrote the kana preface to the Shin Kokin Wakashū.
This is the third poem of the Shiga sequence. Where 87 and 88 likened the blossoms to waves rising in the sky and on the peaks, this poem says that the waves of the lake turn into blossoms, reversing the direction of the likening.

First line, "sakura saku": modifies "Hira" in the second line: Hira where the cherries bloom.
Second line, "Hira no yamakaze": Hira is a mountain on the western shore of Lake Biwa and a poetic place; this is the wind blowing down from it to the lake.
Third line, "fuku mama ni": "as it blows on," expressing change advancing with time.
Fourth line, "hana ni nariyuku": "gradually becoming blossoms," as petals float on the lake and the waves fill with flowers.
Fifth line, "Shiga no uranami": ends on a noun, the waves lapping at Shiga's bay. "Nami no hana koso" in 78 of this book likewise calls blossoms floating on water flowers of the waves.
