The blossoms' spring
has been doubled, yet to no avail
has it been so:
would that more days had been added
when the blossoms did not fall
- Meaning

Book Two Spring Poems II 132
Headnote: "Composed at the end of the intercalary Third Month"
Composed on the last day of an intercalary Third Month. The extra month doubled the Third Month and lengthened the season of blossoms, yet it was all to no avail; it would have been worthwhile only if the days when the blossoms do not fall had increased. Lamenting that the flowers do not wait though the calendar extends spring, the poem shows both hope for a longer spring and the emptiness of a spring prolonged only after the blossoms have gone.
The author, "Provisional Senior Supervisor of Monks Hangen," is Hangen, son of Fujiwara no Tamenari, who became a monk of Kōfukuji and rose through Provisional Senior Supervisor of Monks to Superintendent of Kōfukuji and Provisional Archbishop.
First line, "hana no haru": "the spring of blossoms."
Second line, "kasanaru kai zo": "kasanaru" refers to the Third Month being doubled by the intercalary month, and "kai" is worth or effect. The emphatic "zo" links with "keru" in the third line.
Third line, "nakarikeru": "there was no worth in it," closing the construction with "zo." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "chiranu hikazu no": "of days when blossoms do not fall." This answers "hana mo hikazu mo tsumorinuru" in the book's opening poem, 77, which spoke of the days spent watching the blossoms; near the book's end comes a poem wishing for more days of unfallen flowers.
Fifth line, "sowaba koso arame": "koso" closes with the realized form "me": "it would be well if they were added," lamenting that in fact they are not.
