Book Three Summer Poems 149
Headnote: "Composed on the cuckoo for a poetry contest held by Akisue, Master of the Office of Palace Repairs"
Composed on "the cuckoo" for a poetry contest sponsored by Fujiwara no Akisue, Master of the Office of Palace Repairs. The nights spent awake waiting for the cuckoo keep piling up, yet the poet laments that summer may end without his hearing it call a second time. A heart that heard one call and keeps waiting to hear it again is set against the great number of sleepless nights.
The author, "Fujiwara no Michitsune," was the son of Fujiwara no Akitsuna. He served as Governor of Izumi and rose to Junior Fifth Rank, Upper Grade. Active in the poetry circle of Fujiwara no Tadamichi's house, he is said to have introduced Shunzei to Mototoshi.
First line, "futakoe to": "a second call," assuming one call has already been heard. Poem 166 of this book also ends with "futakoe wa kiku."
Second line, "kikade ya yamamu": "de" is the negative conjunctive and the interrogative "ya" closes with the attributive "mu": "will it end without my hearing?" The poem pauses here.
Third line, "hototogisu": an address to the cuckoo.
Fourth line, "matsu ni nenu yo no": "of nights I do not sleep, waiting." Like "nenu ni akenu to" in the preceding poem, 148, it depicts sleepless nights of waiting.
Fifth line, "kazu wa tsumorite": "their number piling up," inverted with the second line. A single call is set against the mounting count of nights.
