Book Three Summer Poems 161
Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Hearing the Cuckoo at Dawn'"
Composed on the topic "Hearing the Cuckoo at Dawn." Hearing a single cry before daybreak, the poet gazes toward where it sang, but the bird is gone, and only the moon lingering at dawn remains in the sky. Overlaying the echo of the voice with the moon left in a sky its singer has deserted, and shifting the impression from ear to eye, the poem conveys the stillness and lingering feeling of dawn. It is widely known as a famous poem chosen for the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The author, "Minister of the Right," is Fujiwara no Sanesada, son of Minister of the Right Fujiwara no Kinyoshi. He was Minister of the Right when the Senzai Wakashū was compiled and later rose to Minister of the Left. Called the Later Tokudaiji Minister of the Left, he has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, "hototogisu": names the subject, the cuckoo.
Second line, "nakitsuru kata o": "tsuru" is the attributive of the perfective "tsu": "toward where it has just sung."
Third line, "nagamureba": the realized condition, "when I gaze out."
Fourth line, "tada ariake no": "ariake" is the moon still in the sky after dawn. Poem 215 of this book also ends with "ariake no tsuki."
Fifth line, "tsuki zo nokoreru": "zo" closes with the attributive "ru," showing only the moon left after the cuckoo has gone. Where the preceding poem, 160, wished to hear the cuckoo in a dream, this one tells of hearing it awake at dawn.
