Book Three Summer Poems 177
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
On a night of steady early summer rain, the poet's thoughts go out to the loneliness of a grass hut where someone lived long ago, deep in a rainy night. It is said to draw on Bai Juyi's line about "a rainy night in a grass hut on Mount Lu," and while in the capital on a rainy night, the poet feels for the solitude of a recluse of old on such a night. Poems on the summer rains begin here.
The author, "Prince Sukehito, Third Son of the Enkyū Emperor," is Prince Sukehito, third son of Emperor Go-Sanjō, known as the Enkyū Emperor. He never came to the throne, but excelled in Chinese and Japanese poetry, and was the father of Minamoto no Arihito, the Hanazono Minister of the Left.
This poem and the ten that follow, through 187, form a sequence on the early summer rains.
First line, "samidare ni": "in the early summer rain." Sharing its opening with the preceding poem, 176, it hands the book over from the orange-blossom sequence to the summer-rain sequence.
Second line, "omoi koso yare": "omoiyaru" means to send one's thoughts afar, and the emphatic "koso" closes with the realized form "yare." The poem pauses here.
Third line, "inishie no": "of long ago," suggesting a recluse of old.
Fourth line, "kusa no iori no": "of a hut thatched with grass."
Fifth line, "yowa no sabishisa": ends on a noun, the loneliness of a rainy night's depths. The next poem, 178, also depicts summer rain on a humble hut.
