Book Three Summer Poems 185
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed when presenting a hundred-poem sequence to Retired Emperor Sutoku"
Like the preceding poem, this belongs to the hundred-poem sequence presented to Retired Emperor Sutoku. Because the summer rains have gone on so long, the firewood the fisherfolk use to burn seaweed for salt has grown damp and rotted, and the smoke that used to rise along the shore has long since ceased. The lonely sight of a shore without smoke conveys the length of the rains. The run of five poems from Retired Emperor Sutoku's sequence ends here.
The author, "Aki of Taikenmon'in's Household," was a lady-in-waiting who served Fujiwara no Shōshi, Taikenmon'in, consort of Emperor Toba. She was one of the poets of Retired Emperor Sutoku's Kyūan Hundred-Poem Sequence.
First line, "samidare wa": "wa" marks the season of summer rains. Poem 183 of this book opens the same way and also depicts salt-burning on the shore.
Second line, "ama no moshiogi": "ama" are fisherfolk and "moshiogi" the firewood for burning seaweed into salt.
Third line, "kuchinikeri": "ni" is the continuative of the perfective "nu" and "keri" exclamatory. The poem pauses here. Poems 181 and 184 of this book also tell of things rotting in the summer rains.
Fourth line, "urabe ni keburi": the salt-making smoke rising on the shore. Where 183 of this book showed that smoke growing damp, this poem says it has ceased altogether, carrying the same scene a step further.
Fifth line, "taete hodo henu": "hodo" is a span of time and "nu" perfective: "it is long since it ceased."
