my sleeves are wet with drops

this restless sleep upon the waves!

Book Three Summer Poems 187

Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Summer Rains at a Boat's Mooring'"
Composed on the topic "Summer Rains at a Boat's Mooring." On a voyage, on a night of summer rain, the poet's sleeves are wet with drops from the rush matting over the boat; ah, how damp with brine is this sorrowful sleep upon the waves. Pivoting on "ukine," both sleeping afloat and sleeping in sorrow, the poem depicts the misery of travel by boat together with the dampness of the long rains. The summer-rain sequence ends here.
The author, "Minamoto no Nakamasa," was the son of Minamoto no Yoritsuna, Head of the Arsenal Bureau. He also served as Head of the Arsenal Bureau and was the father of Minamoto no Yorimasa.

First line, "samidare wa": "in the time of summer rains," the same opening as 183 and 185 of this book.
Second line, "toma no shizuku ni": "toma" is matting of sedge or reeds woven to cover boats and huts.
Third line, "sode nurete": "my sleeves wet with the drops."
Fourth line, "ana shiodoke no": "ana" is an interjection, and "shiodoke" means being moist with brine, damp through.
Fifth line, "nami no ukine ya": "ukine" is a pivot word for sleeping afloat and sleeping in sorrow, and "ya" is exclamatory. Where "Suma no urabito" in 183 of this book spoke of the wet sleeves of shore dwellers, this poem speaks of a traveler's wet sleeves aboard a boat.
