Forgetting even
the ever-summer pinks,
in the autumn wind
under the shade of the pines
I have passed this day away
Meaning
Forgetting even the ever-summer pinks, I have spent this whole day in the shade of the pines, enjoying a wind as cool as autumn's.
Commentary
Book Three Summer Poems 207

Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Enjoying the Cool Beneath the Pines'"
Composed on the topic "Enjoying the Cool Beneath the Pines." Forgetting even to admire the ever-summer pinks of high summer, the poet has spent the whole day in the shade of the pines, fanned by a breeze as cool as the autumn wind. Setting "tokonatsu," ever-summer, against "akikaze," autumn wind, the poem expresses the pleasure of finding autumn's coolness in the pine shade amid the summer heat.
The author, "Prince Tomohira, Minister of Central Affairs," was the seventh son of Emperor Murakami. He served as Minister of Central Affairs, was called the Later Chūsho Prince, and excelled in poetry and learning.

First line, "tokonatsu no": "tokonatsu" is another name for the pink, its name suggesting a summer that lasts forever. Following the China pink of the preceding poem, 206, it again treats the pink.
Second line, "hana mo wasurete": "forgetting even to admire the flowers."
Third line, "akikaze o": "a wind like autumn's," set against "tokonatsu." Poems 220 and 225 of this book also speak of the autumn wind, and the signs of autumn deepen as the summer book draws to its end.
Fourth line, "matsu no kage nite": "in the shade of the pines," expressing "beneath the pines" in the headnote.
Fifth line, "kyō wa kurenuru": "nuru" is the attributive of the perfective "nu": "today has come to its end."
