sounds clear and cold,

Commentary
Book Three Summer Poems 210

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
In the mountain shade the sound of spring water trickling from between the rocks is cold and clear, and the voice of the evening cicada heard there is so cool it seems to lie outside of summer. Through two sounds, the spring water and the cicada, the poem makes one feel an autumn-like coolness in the depths of summer. Poems on spring water and seeking the cool begin here.
The author, "Hōin Jien," was the son of Regent Fujiwara no Tadamichi. He served four times as Tendai Abbot and later rose to Archbishop. He wrote the historical work Gukanshō, and a poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
This poem and the four that follow, through 214, form a sequence on the coolness of summer found in springs and mountain water.

First line, "yamakage ya": "ya" is an exclamatory particle naming the place: "the mountain shade."
Second line, "iwa moru shimizu": "moru" means to leak, the clear water trickling from between the rocks. "Iwama moru shimizu" in 212 of this book works the same idea.
Third line, "oto saete": "sayu" here means a sound grown cold and clear. Where the moon shone clear in 188 of this book, here it is the sound of the spring.
Fourth line, "natsu no hoka naru": "outside of summer," not seeming to belong to summer.
Fifth line, "higurashi no koe": ends on a noun, the voice of the cicada that sings at dusk. Against the cicada-wing robes of early summer in 137 of this book, the cicada's voice of late summer is heard here.
