the voice of the evening cicada

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poet wishes for someone dear to be by her side, so that she might show them the bush clover blooming in the evening light and let them hear the evening cicada's voice. Setting side by side the bush clover lovely to the eye and the cicada's voice that pierces the ear, she pours into the opening wish the loneliness of having no one to share such beauty with.
The author, "Izumi Shikibu," was the daughter of Ōe no Masamune, Governor of Echizen. She became the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, and later served Fujiwara no Shōshi, consort of Emperor Ichijō. Known for her passionate love poetry, she has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
From this poem through 250, poems on bush clover follow one another.

First line, "hito mo ga na": "mo ga na" expresses a wish: "would that there were someone." The poem pauses here.
Second line, "mise mo kikase mo": "to show and to let hear," with "mise" answering the bush clover and "kikase" the cicada's voice.
Third line, "hagi no hana": modifies "saku" in the fourth line and is what she would "show."
Fourth line, "saku yūkage no": "yūkage" is the evening light, the dusk hour, the scene where the bush clover blooms.
Fifth line, "higurashi no koe": ends on a noun and is what she would "let hear," closing with a pair of something seen and something heard.
