Book Four Autumn Poems I 254
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
Seeing maiden flowers bent and laid low by the wind, leaning against a hedge, the poet realizes that the hedge is their pillow. Likening the maiden flowers to a woman, he sees their leaning against the hedge after being blown down as the figure of a woman resting her head on a pillow. The poems on maiden flowers end here.
The author, "Fujiwara no Yukiie," was the son of Fujiwara no Yukikuni and a courtier of the late Heian period. Little is known of his life.
"Susono no hagi zo magaki narikeru" in 248 of this book sees bush clover as a hedge, and this poem sees a hedge as the pillow of maiden flowers; the two echo each other through "magaki" and the pattern "zo ... narikeru."
First line, "fuku kaze ni": "by the blowing wind." After 252 showed maiden flowers bending in the wind, this poem shows them blown down.
Second line, "orefushinureba": "orefusu" means to break and fall prostrate, and "nure" is the realized form of the perfective "nu": "since they have been laid low."
Third line, "ominaeshi": names the subject, the maiden flowers.
Fourth line, "magaki zo hana no": a "magaki" is a loosely woven hedge, and "zo" links with "keru" in the last line. Like "magaki narikeru" in 248 of this book, it speaks of a hedge.
Fifth line, "makura narikeru": "keru," the attributive of "keri" expressing realization, closes with "zo," seeing the flowers leaning on the hedge as one resting on a pillow.
