Book Four Autumn Poems I 261
Headnote: "Composed as a poem on grasses and flowers when having a hundred-poem sequence composed at my house"
Composed by the poet himself on "grasses and flowers" when he had poets compose hundred-poem sequences at his residence. He has already transplanted all the various autumn flowers of the fields into his garden, so now he calls on the autumn wind of the fields to lure the deer's voices and carry them to him. Since flowers can be transplanted but voices cannot, he entrusts them to the autumn wind, an elegant wish to recreate the autumn fields whole in his garden.
The author, "the Regent and Former Minister of the Right," is Kujō Kanezane, son of Chancellor Fujiwara no Tadamichi. After serving as Minister of the Right he became Regent, holding that office when the Senzai Wakashū was compiled, and he left the diary Gyokuyō.
Like "samazama ni" in 256 of this book, it sings of the variety of the autumn fields, and where 257 made the fields a dwelling, this poem tries to move the fields into the house.
First line, "samazama no": "of every kind," echoing "samazama ni" in 256 of this book.
Second line, "hana o ba yado ni": "o ba" emphasizes the object: "the flowers, into my garden."
Third line, "utsushiuetsu": "tsu" is perfective: "I have transplanted them." The line has six syllables instead of five, and the poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "shika no ne sasoe": "sasoe" is imperative, "lure the deer's voices here," seeking sound for the ear after flowers for the eye.
Fifth line, "nobe no akikaze": ends on a noun, naming the one addressed.
