Book Four Autumn Poems I 281
Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'The Moon on the Water' at Provisional Middle Counselor Toshitada's house at Katsura"
Composed at the Katsura residence of Provisional Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Toshitada on the topic "The Moon on the Water." At the Jewel River of Noji, the water flowing over the bush clover on its banks is tinged with the flowers' color, and the moonlight lodges on those colored waves; the poet resolves to come again tomorrow. He paints the lovely scene of bush clover color and moonlight overlapping on the waves, together with the wish to return.
The author, "Minamoto no Toshiyori Ason," was the son of Major Counselor Minamoto no Tsunenobu. The central poet of Emperor Horikawa's poetry circle, he compiled the Kin'yō Wakashū at the command of Retired Emperor Shirakawa and wrote the treatise Toshiyori Zuinō. A poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The Jewel River of Noji, in Ōmi, is a poetic place famed for bush clover and counted among the six Jewel Rivers. "Yadoru tsukikage" in 296 of this book also speaks of moonlight lodging in dew.
