Book Four Autumn Poems I 299
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
Even if your heart should be lured away by the moon and wander off, the poet pleads, please think of the deep sorrow of autumn felt by all. Addressed to someone whose heart is captured by the moon's beauty, it asks him to understand the feelings of one who dwells in autumn's loneliness, taking the form of an appeal.
The author, "Murasaki Shikibu," was the daughter of Fujiwara no Tametoki, Governor of Echigo. She served Fujiwara no Shōshi, consort of Emperor Ichijō, and is known as the author of The Tale of Genji. A poem of hers is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
In her personal collection, the Murasaki Shikibu-shū, it appears as one poem in an exchange with another person. Poem 267 of this book also opens with "ōkata no," contrasting the dew of the world with the dew on one's own sleeves, and it echoes this poem's sorrow of autumn felt by all.
First line, "ōkata no": "common, of the world at large," the same opening line as 267 of this book.
Second line, "aki no aware o": "aware" is deep feeling, loneliness.
Third line, "omoiyare": imperative, "please think of it." The poem pauses here and is inverted with the lines that follow.
Fourth line, "tsuki ni kokoro wa": "your heart, drawn by the moon."
Fifth line, "akugarenu tomo": "akugaru" means for the heart to leave the body and wander, "nu" is perfective and "tomo" a concessive hypothetical: "even if it should wander off."
