Book Five Autumn Poems II 325
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a poem on the deer"
Composed as a poem on the deer. On the autumn wind that passes from the peak down to the fields before the house, the poet says, a stag's voice comes across the rice leaves. Setting the deer's voice on the wind's path from the mountain down to the village, he depicts the breadth of the countryside in the autumn of harvest.
The author, "Jakuren Hōshi," was the son of Fujiwara no Shunkai. Adopted by his uncle Fujiwara no Shunzei, he later took holy orders. He was named one of the compilers of the Shin Kokin Wakashū, and a poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
With this poem the run of deer poems closes. Ever since Minamoto no Tsunenobu's Kin'yō Wakashū poem, "When evening comes, the autumn wind visits the rice leaves in the fields before the gate," the autumn wind over such fields had been a beloved subject, and this poem adds to it the deer's voice.
First line, "onoe yori": "onoe" is the summit of a mountain, where the wind sets out. 309 of this book also sings of a deer crying on the "onoe."
Second line, "kadota ni kayou": "kadota" is the field before the gate of a house, tracing the wind's path from the peak to the fields.
Third line, "akikaze ni": "on the autumn wind," naming what carries the deer's voice.
Fourth line, "inaba o wataru": "inaba" are the leaves of rice, the voice passing over the ripening fields.
Fifth line, "saoshika no koe": ending on a noun, the same last line as 312 and 314 of this book. With it the run of deer poems is closed.
