Book Five Autumn Poems II 340
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the topic 'Fulling Cloth' when a hundred-poem sequence was presented in the reign of Emperor Horikawa"
Composed on the topic of fulling cloth for the Horikawa Hyakushu. In autumn, the poet says, the sound of the pine wind alone is lonely enough, yet in the village of Tamagawa there comes as well the sound of the fulling block. Laying two sounds, the pine wind and the block, together, he depicts an autumn village where loneliness grows ever deeper.
The author, "Minamoto no Toshiyori Ason," was the son of Major Counselor Minamoto no Tsunenobu. The central poet of Emperor Horikawa's poetry circle, he compiled the Kin'yō Wakashū at the command of Retired Emperor Shirakawa and wrote the treatise Toshiyori Zuinō. A poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
304 of this book also sings of the sadness of the wind in the pines.
First line, "matsukaze no": the sound of the wind in the pines, also sung of in 304 of this book.
Second line, "oto dani aki wa": "dani" means "even," naming the lighter case, "even the sound of the pine wind."
Third line, "sabishiki ni": "ni" adds what follows, "to this loneliness, moreover." It is the same phrasing as "sabishiki ni" in 307 of this book, where another sound joins the loneliness.
Fourth line, "koromo utsu nari": "nari" infers from sound, "I hear cloth being beaten." The poem pauses here.
Fifth line, "Tamagawa no sato": the poem ends on a noun. "Tamagawa" is a poetic place name found in many provinces, here sung of as a village where cloth is fulled.
