Book Five Autumn Poems II 371
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on going to view autumn leaves at the Ōi River"
Composed on going to view the autumn leaves at the Ōi River. The autumn leaves float down the Ōi River, the poet says: is it only the storm on the peak that lures them away? No, the river's current lures them too. Setting side by side the storm that scatters the leaves and the current that carries them off, he regrets where the leaves go.
The author, "Dōin Hōshi," is Fujiwara no Atsuyori, son of Fujiwara no Kiyotaka, who took holy orders late in life. He was known for his deep devotion to poetry, and a poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
It was composed at the Ōi River on the same occasion as the preceding poem, 370. Where that poem sang of the storm blowing the leaves down, this one says that not only the storm but the river too lures them away.
First line, "Ōigawa": a river in Yamashiro, the same river as the third line of the preceding poem, 370.
Second line, "nagarete otsuru": "borne down on the current."
Third line, "momiji kana": "kana" is exclamatory, and the poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "sasou wa mine no": "sasou" is for wind and the like to lure away and scatter blossoms or leaves. Like "arashi no sasou" in 362 of this book, it sings of what lures the leaves away.
Fifth line, "arashi nomi ka wa": "ka wa" is rhetorical, "is it only the storm on the peak? No," meaning the current also lures the leaves. It answers "Arashi no yama" in the preceding poem, 370.
