Book Five Autumn Poems II 375
Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Autumn Leaves Among the Pines'"
Composed on the topic "Autumn Leaves Among the Pines." What he hears is the wind in the pines that never change color, the poet says, yet what is falling is not the pine but the autumn leaves of the oaks. Contrasting the pines that make the sound with the oaks that scatter in silence, he depicts autumn leaves mingled among the evergreen pines.
The author, "Fujiwara no Tomonaka," was a poet of the cloistered-rule period, but little is known of his life.
367 of this book also sings of pines keeping their green amid the autumn leaves, and the next poem, 376, sings of a pine that stays green amid fallen leaves.
First line, "iro kaenu": "not changing color," the evergreen pine. It pairs with "iro kaete" in the next poem, 376, the unchanging set against the changing.
Second line, "matsu fuku kaze no": "of the wind blowing through the pines." Like "matsu no muradachi" in 367 of this book, it sings of pines among the autumn leaves.
Third line, "oto wa shite": the particle "wa," "there is the sound," separating what is heard from what is seen.
Fourth line, "chiru wa hahaso no": "hahaso" are oaks of the konara and kunugi kind, sung of as trees that color in autumn. 368 and 374 of this book also sing of these oaks.
Fifth line, "momiji narikeri": "nari" is assertive and "keri" expresses realization, "what falls is the oak's leaves."
