Book Five Autumn Poems II 378
Headnote: "Composed when a hundred-poem sequence was presented in the reign of Emperor Horikawa"
Composed for a hundred-poem sequence presented in the reign of Emperor Horikawa. Until now, the poet says, he had thought lightly of the charm of a mountain village where autumn leaves fall on the ripening autumn fields. Learning anew the beauty of fields paired with autumn leaves, he praises the scene by reflecting on how he had once slighted the mountain village.
The author, "Minamoto no Toshiyori Ason," was the son of Major Counselor Minamoto no Tsunenobu. The central poet of Emperor Horikawa's poetry circle, he compiled the Kin'yō Wakashū at the command of Retired Emperor Shirakawa and wrote the treatise Toshiyori Zuinō. A poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
303 of this book, also a mountain-village poem from the Horikawa Hyakushu, sang of the loneliness of autumn there. This poem finds in the same kind of village the beauty of fields and autumn leaves.
First line, "aki no ta ni": "on the ripening autumn fields," where the leaves fall. 325 and 327 of this book also sing of autumn fields.
Second line, "momiji chirikeru": "keru" is the attributive of the realizational "keri," "the leaves are falling," voicing wonder at the scene before him.
Third line, "yamazato o": naming what he thought of. Since 303, autumn in the mountain village has been sung again and again in this book.
Fourth line, "koto mo oroka ni": "carelessly, lightly."
Fifth line, "omoikeru kana": "keri" expresses realization, "so I had thought until now," showing him looking back on himself.
