Book Six Winter Poems 401
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
On the broad leaves of the oaks by the hillside of a moor withering under the cold frost, the poet says, he hears the winter showers fall. Through the sound of the showers striking oak leaves already withering in the frost, he catches by ear the loneliness of the moor in early winter.
The author, "Fujiwara no Mototoshi," was the son of Minister of the Right Fujiwara no Toshiie. A leading figure of the poetry world of the cloistered-rule period alongside Minamoto no Toshiyori, he was the teacher of Fujiwara no Shunzei. A poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
From here the book leaves poems on frost and turns to winter showers, which continue through 417. Taking up the frost poems before it with "shimo saete," this poem bridges the way to the showers.
First line, "shimo saete": "sayu" is to grow cold and clear, the chill of the frost. 427 of this book opens with the same line.
Second line, "kareyuku ono no": "of the moor where all is withering," "ono" meaning a moor or field.
Third line, "okabe naru": "okabe" is the area of a hillside, and "naru" shows location, "which is on."
Fourth line, "nara no hiroha ni": the broad leaves of the nara, a deciduous oak. 445 of this book places the same phrase in "nara no hiroha ni fureru shirayuki," letting snow fall where this poem has showers.
Fifth line, "shigure furu nari": "shigure" are the on-and-off showers of late autumn and early winter, and "nari" infers from sound, "I hear the showers falling."
