Book Six Winter Poems 419
Headnote: "Sent when Middle Counselor Sadayori was living in a mountain village after leaving the world"
A poem sent by the author to her father, Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Sadayori, when he had taken the tonsure and was living in a mountain village. Even in the capital, she says, the season of the cold wind makes loneliness deepen, so she can only imagine how lonely the wind in the pines on his mountain peak must be. From the cold wind in the capital she guesses at her father's loneliness in the hills and conveys her concern for him.
The author, "Daughter of Middle Counselor Sadayori," was a daughter of Provisional Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Sadayori. Her name and further details of her life have not come down.
This poem and the next, 420, set the poems of a daughter and her father side by side. Where this poem looks from the capital toward her father in the hills, the next is a poem Sadayori composed at Uji, singing of a winter scene away from the capital.
First line, "miyako dani": "dani," "even," names the lighter case to suggest the heavier, "if it is so even in the capital, how much more in the hills."
Second line, "sabishisa masaru": "loneliness grows still greater."
Third line, "kogarashi ni": "kogarashi" is the strong, cold wind that blows from late autumn into winter.
Fourth line, "mine no matsukaze": the wind in the pines on the peak of the mountain village where her father lives.
Fifth line, "omoi koso yare": "omoiyaru" is to imagine something far away, with the emphatic "koso" set inside it, closing in the perfective form "yare."
