Book Six Winter Poems 439
Headnote: "Composed as a poem on ice"
Composed as a poem on ice. Where, the poet asks, does the moon let its light rest now, when even the water where it used to dwell has frozen over? Taking the moon's part, he worries over it as having lost its dwelling now that ice has sealed the surface where it was reflected.
The author, "Sadaiben Chikamune," is Taira no Chikamune, son of Taira no Tokinobu and younger brother of Kenshunmon'in Shigeko, consort of Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa. He later rose to Middle Counselor.
The three poems from 439 to 441 are poems on ice placed under the same headnote. Where the preceding poem, 438, sings of the moon dwelling even beneath the ice, this poem sings of a moon that has lost its dwelling because of the ice, a reversed composition.
First line, "izuku ni ka": "izuku" means "where," and the interrogative "ka" closes with the attributive "ran" in the second line.
Second line, "tsuki wa hikari o": "the moon its light."
Third line, "todomu ran": "todomu" is to keep or let rest, and "ran" is the present conjecture. The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "yadorishi mizu mo": "yadoru" is for moonlight to be reflected in water, and "shi" is the attributive of the past "ki," taking up the "yadoru tsuki" of the preceding poem, 438.
Fifth line, "kōri inikeri": "kōri iru" is for ice to form, and "keri" expresses realization. It is the same turn of phrase as "tsurara inikeri" in 434 of this book.
