Book Six Winter Poems 455
Headnote: "Composed as a poem on snow when the courtiers presented a hundred-poem sequence"
Composed by Emperor Nijō himself on the topic of snow when the courtiers presented a hundred-poem sequence. Is a blizzard sweeping across the snow-laden peaks, he asks, as white clouds wander adrift in the skies of Koshi? From white clouds tossing in the distant sky of Koshi he imagines the blizzard raging over the peaks beneath them.
The author, "Nijōin Gyosei," is Emperor Nijō, the seventy-eighth emperor and son of Emperor Go-Shirakawa, who died young while still on the throne. He loved waka and often held poetry gatherings at the palace.
Poems on snow continue from 445 to 467. Where 452 of this book sings of the whiteness of snow on the high peaks of Koshi, this poem sings of white clouds in the sky of Koshi, catching the snow of the same province at the different heights of mountain and sky.
First line, "yuki tsumoru": "snow-laden," modifying "mine," the peaks, in the second line.
Second line, "mine ni fubuki ya": "fubuki" is snow driven by a fierce wind, and the interrogative "ya" closes with the attributive "ramu" in the third line.
Third line, "wataru ramu": "wataru" is to sweep across, and "ramu" is the present conjecture. The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "Koshi no misora ni": "Koshi" is an old name for the Hokuriku region, and "misora" an elegant word for the sky. Like "Koshi no takane" in 452 of this book, it sings of the province of Koshi.
Fifth line, "mayou shirakumo": the poem ends on a noun. "Mayou" is to drift in disorder, white clouds that might also be the spindrift raised by the blizzard.
