I have passed the year in sighs,
lamenting, lamenting,
and now the year itself tonight
has come to its final end
Meaning
Telling myself "even so, someday," I have spent the year in sigh upon sigh, and now tonight the year itself has come to its end.
Commentary
Book Six Winter Poems 470

Headnote: "Composed at the end of a year when he had shut himself away"
Composed at the end of a year when he had shut himself away at home. Telling himself "even so, someday," the poet says, he has spent the year in sigh upon sigh, and now tonight the year itself has come to its end. It laments a year lived on in hope that ends with nothing answered.
The author, "Former Captain of the Left Gate Guards Kinmitsu," is Fujiwara no Kinmitsu, son of Provisional Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Suenari, who served as Provisional Middle Counselor and Captain of the Left Gate Guards.
The seven poems from 469 to 475, the last poem of the book, are poems on the end of the year. The final poem of Book Five, 386, sang of the last night of autumn with "koyoi made aki wa kagire." This poem sings of the last night of the year with "toshi mo koyoi ni," voicing endings on different scales, of autumn and of the year, with the same word "koyoi," tonight.

First line, "saritomo to": "even so, someday," a heart clinging to faint hope.
Second line, "nageki nagekite": "lamenting, lamenting," the repeated word deepening the grief.
Third line, "sugushitsuru": "tsuru," the attributive of the perfective "tsu," "that I have spent."
Fourth line, "toshi mo koyoi ni": "mo" adds "the year too, not only my hopes." It is the same word as "koyoi made" in the final poem of Book Five, 386.
Fifth line, "kurehatenikeri": "kurehatsu" is to come wholly to an end, and "keri" expresses realization.
