Book Six Winter Poems 472
Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Reflections at the Year's End'"
Composed on the topic of reflections at the year's end. If only the years would not pile up on someone of no account like him, the poet says, he would not have to grieve at the close of this day. Through a supposition contrary to fact, he laments that though he is not treated as others are, his years still pile up like anyone else's.
The author, "Koremune no Hirokoto," was an official and poet of the late Heian period. He was also versed in imayō songs, and his personal collection is the Koremune no Hirokoto Shū.
The seven poems from 469 to 475, the last poem of the book, are poems on the end of the year. This poem and the next, 473, were composed on the same topic of reflections at the year's end.
First line, "kazu naranu": "counting for nothing, of no account," showing low standing or ill fortune.
Second line, "mi ni wa tsumoranu": "tsumoru" is for one's years to pile up, building the reasoning that one who does not count should not be counted in years either.
Third line, "toshi naraba": "if it were a year that," a supposition contrary to fact.
Fourth line, "kyō no kure o mo": "even the close of today," the last day of the year.
Fifth line, "nagekazaramashi": the counterfactual "mashi," answering "naraba" in the third line, "I would not grieve," showing from the other side the grief that is real.
