Book Seven Parting Poems 486
Headnote: "Reply"
A reply to Fujiwara no Tsunehira's poem before it. Think of the heart of one who has spent long years in Tsukushi, the poet says, when even you long for the flowering capital. To Tsunehira, who wishes to hold him back, he answers that if even you, so recently posted to Tsukushi, long for the capital, how much more must I, who have been away for years.
The author, "Senior Assistant Governor-General Suketada," is Minamoto no Suketada, son of Minamoto no Narimasa, who rose to Imperial Adviser and served as Senior Assistant Governor-General of Dazaifu. He excelled at music, including the biwa and wagon, and appears in the Sarashina Diary discussing with its author the merits of spring and autumn.
In this exchange with the preceding poem, 485, its last line ends "miyako naredomo" and this poem's last line ends "hana no miyako o," both closing on the word "miyako."
First line, "toshi hetaru": "taru" is the attributive of the continuative "tari," "having passed long years," the years spent in Tsukushi as Senior Assistant Governor-General.
Second line, "hito no kokoro o": "hito" refers to the poet himself.
Third line, "omoiyare": the imperative of "omoiyaru," "please imagine." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "kimi dani kouru": the particle "dani," "even you long for," answering "ware mo koishiki" in the preceding poem.
Fifth line, "hana no miyako o": "the flowering capital," returning by inversion to "omoiyare" in the third line. Like "miyako naredomo" in the preceding poem's last line, it closes on "miyako."
