Book Eight Travel Poems 508
Headnote: "Composed on the theme of wild geese at a traveler's lodging for a poetry contest held when the Lay Monk of Hosshōji was Palace Minister"
Composed on the topic "wild geese at a traveler's lodging" for a poetry contest held when Fujiwara no Tadamichi was Palace Minister. Deep in the night the wild geese too call as they pass through the clouds; am I the only one under a traveler's sky? No, the poet says. In the cries of the geese heard on a night away from home, he finds fellow travelers and consoles his lonely heart.
The author, "Minamoto no Masamitsu," was the son of Minister of the Right Minamoto no Akifusa, of the Murakami Genji.
In the main text the second line reads "kumoi ni kari mo," which does not match the reading line, "kumoi no kari mo." Here the main text is followed.
First line, "sayo fukaki": "sa" is a prefix, "deep in the night."
Second line, "kumoi ni kari mo": "kumoi" is where the clouds are, the sky. "Mo" implies "the geese too, like me."
Third line, "otosu nari": "nari" infers from hearing, "I hear them calling." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "ware hitori ya wa": the rhetorical "ya wa" closes with the attributive "naru" in the last line.
Fifth line, "tabi no sora naru": "naru" is the attributive of the copula "nari," "am I alone under a traveler's sky? I am not." Where the preceding poem, 507, laments a journey in longing for the capital, this poem finds companions on the road in the geese.
