Book Eight Travel Poems 513
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of travel when he called for a hundred-poem sequence"
A poem on the topic of travel from the Kyūan Hyakushu. The mountains of the capital, which I kept gazing back at all along the road with my heart adrift, have at last been hidden by clouds, the poet says. Catching the moment when the mountains she had been looking back at as she left the capital finally vanish, she conveys the forlorn feeling that the separation from the capital has become complete.
The author, "Taikenmon'in no Horikawa," was the daughter of Minamoto no Akinaka, Head of the Council of Divinities. She served Taikenmon'in Shōshi, consort of Emperor Toba, and was one of the poets of the Kyūan Hyakushu. She has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
It is the fifth in the sequence of travel poems from the Kyūan Hyakushu.
First line, "michisugara": "all along the way."
Second line, "kokoro mo sora ni": "sora" means both a heart that is absent and restless and the sky into which she gazes.
Third line, "nagameyaru": "to gaze far off," modifying "miyako no yama" in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "miyako no yama no": the mountains around the capital, still visible as she looked back after leaving.
Fifth line, "kumogakurenuru": "nuru" is the attributive of the perfective "nu," "they have been hidden by cloud," ending in the attributive form for a lingering effect.
