in a rush-thatched hut on the shore,
with the rudder for a pillow,
I hear the sound of waves
I never learned to hear

Traveling from bay to bay, sleeping in a rush-thatched hut on the shore with a rudder for my pillow, I hear the sound of waves to which my ears are not accustomed.
Commentary
Book Eight Travel Poems 515

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of travel when he called for a hundred-poem sequence"
A poem on the topic of travel from the Kyūan Hyakushu. Traveling by boat from bay to bay and sleeping in a rush-thatched hut on the shore with a rudder for a pillow, I hear the sound of waves I am not used to, the poet says. He conveys the loneliness of a night by the sea, lying awake to the rough sound of waves that a person of the capital never hears.
The author, "Master of the Empress Dowager's Household Shunzei," is Fujiwara no Shunzei, son of Provisional Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Toshitada. He served as Master of the Empress Dowager's Household and compiled this anthology by order of Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa. He was the father of Fujiwara no Teika and has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
It is the seventh in the sequence of travel poems from the Kyūan Hyakushu and closes it.

First line, "ura tsutau": "passing from bay to bay," a journey by boat along the shore.
Second line, "iso no tomaya no": "tomaya" is a rough hut roofed with mats woven of sedge or reeds. Poem 532 of this book also sings of sleeping in "iso no tomaya."
Third line, "kajimakura": sleeping with the boat's rudder as a pillow, that is, sleeping aboard a boat. The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "kiki mo narawanu": "narau" means to grow used to, "that I am not used to hearing."
Fifth line, "nami no oto kana": the exclamatory "kana," voicing his feeling at the sound of waves never heard in the capital.
