Book Nine Poems of Lament 560
Headnote: "Composed on seeing the moon in the autumn of the year Retired Emperor Ichijō passed away"
Composed on seeing the moon in the autumn of the year Retired Emperor Ichijō died. Is the moonlight simply not clear for anyone, the poet asks; I wish I could show it to someone whose eyes are not clouded by tears. By hinting that the bright moon looks dim not because of the moon but because her own eyes are clouded with tears, she conveys an endless grief.
The author, "Shōkyōden Consort," is Fujiwara no Genshi, daughter of Minister of the Left Fujiwara no Akimitsu, who became a consort of Emperor Ichijō.
Poem 552 of this book was also composed in the year after Emperor Ichijō's death; this poem mourns the late emperor through the autumn moon, and 552 through spring cherry blossoms.
First line, "ōkata ni": "in general," "for everyone."
Second line, "sayakekaranu ka": "sayakekara" is the irrealis of "sayakeshi," "bright and clear," "nu" the attributive of the negative "zu," and "ka" an interrogative particle, "is it not clear?"
Third line, "tsukikage wa": "tsukikage" is moonlight. The subject is placed last by inversion, and the poem pauses here. Poems 576, 594 and 603 of this book also sing of the moon gazed at in remembrance of the dead.
Fourth line, "namida kumoranu": "not clouded by tears," implying that her own eyes are.
Fifth line, "hito ni misebaya": "baya" expresses one's own wish, "I would like to show it to someone."
