Book Nine Poems of Lament 563
Headnote: "Reply"
A reply to the poem by Senji of the Former Empress before it. My sorrow grows deeper, the poet says, when I think that this year of parting ends today. Taking up her feeling that even a sorrowful year is hard to let go, he answers that on this last day of the year, as the parting recedes once more, his grief only deepens.
The author, "Major Counselor Nagaie," was the sixth son of Regent Fujiwara no Michinaga. He rose to Provisional Major Counselor and founded the Mikohidari house. He was the great-grandfather of Fujiwara no Shunzei, compiler of this anthology.
In this exchange with the preceding poem, 562, it takes up that poem's words "kotoshi" and "wakare" in reply.
First line, "kanashisa wa": "the sorrow" of remembering the late emperor and empress. It opens with the same word as "kanashisa ni" in the first line of 561 of this book.
Second line, "itodo zo masaru": "itodo" means "all the more," and the emphatic "zo" closes with the attributive "masaru." The poem pauses here.
Third line, "wakarenishi": "ni" is the continuative of the perfective "nu" and "shi" the attributive of the past "ki," modifying "kotoshi" in the fourth line, "this year in which we parted." It answers "kimi ga wakare ni" in the last line of the preceding poem.
Fourth line, "kotoshi mo kyō o": "kyō" is the last day of the Twelfth Month. It answers "kotoshi kana" in the third line of the preceding poem.
Fifth line, "kagiri to omoeba": "kagiri" is the end, and "omoe" the perfective with "ba," "since I think it is the last," giving the reason for the second line afterward, by inversion.
