Book Nine Poems of Lament 569
Headnote: "Sent when, while I was a chamberlain, in the autumn I went into mourning for a parent, I heard that the courtiers were going to Sagano to view the flowers"
Sent in the autumn when the poet, then a chamberlain, went into mourning for a parent and heard that the courtiers were going to Sagano to see the autumn flowers. In spring we saw the blossoms together, he says, yet sad is this autumn when I am left behind. To the loneliness of being unable to join his friends' outing because of mourning he adds the grief of being left behind by a parent who died, expressing both feelings in the single word "okururu."
The author, "Taira no Masayasu," was an official of the late Heian period who, as the headnote shows, served as a chamberlain, but little is known of his life.
In this book 576 and 603 also open with "morotomo ni," contrasting days spent together with the present in which one is left alone.
First line, "morotomo ni": "together." Poems 576 and 603 of this book open with the same words.
Second line, "haru no hana o ba": "o ba," the particle "o" with "wa" voiced, marks the object strongly. It sets spring against the "autumn" of the last line.
Third line, "mishi mono o": "shi" is the attributive of the past "ki" and "mono o" concessive, "though we saw them."
Fourth line, "hito ni okururu": overlaying being left behind by his friends and unable to join the outing with being left behind by a parent who died.
Fifth line, "aki zo kanashiki": the emphatic "zo" closes with the attributive "kanashiki," the sorrow of being unable to join the autumn outing.
